Integrative Myofascial Release

Offered by Derrick Lundberg, CMT

What is Integrative Myofascial Release?

In Integrative Myofascial Release appointments, Derrick will utilize his skill and extensive training in Myofascial release, Visceral & Neural Manipulation, Craniosacral Therapy, and Chinese Medicine to tailor treatment to specifically fit individual patient needs.

Myofascial Release is a hands-on technique used to manage myofascial pain. “Myo” means muscle. “Fascial” refers to the connective tissue that covers and supports the muscles throughout your entire body. During myofascial release therapy, your therapist doesn’t focus specifically on your muscles. They focus on releasing tension in your fascial tissues.

What are the roots of Myofascial Release?

Growing from the Craniosacral work of John Upledger, John Barnes has followed the results, allowing Myofascial Release to reach remarkable depths. Using the skin as a handle, we use the fascia to reach deeply into the body, offering an adaptive pressure, ranging from off-the-body energy work to a rather firm, but not forceful pressure that meets us right at the barrier of where we are, taking pressure off of pain-sensitive structures and nudging us along our healing journey towards wholeness.

Common Concerns Integrative Myofascial Release Addresses:

  • Back pain, neck pain, & headaches

  • Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

  • Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

  • Sports Injuries & Myofascial Pain Syndrome

  • TMJ, Sciatica & Carpal Tunnel

About Your Practitioner

Headshot of Derrick Lundberg, a smiling man with long hair, glasses, and a beard wearing blue scrubs, indoors with a green wall and whiteboard in the background at Minnesota Integrative Health Studio in Northeast Minneapolis.

Derrick’s (he/him) pursuit of his practice of manual therapies started in 2013 with his certification in massage therapy from the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis.  Within his first year, he was introduced to the John Barnes Myofascial Release Approach; since then, his own healing has guided a pursuit of knowledge that has brought him here with us today.

Beyond the basics of massage therapy, myofascial release has taught Derrick to leave out the lubrication and layers of division between his own hands and his patients’ skin-- this direct contact is essential to getting beyond the superficial layers of the body, using the skin as a handle to reach the deepest levels of the body.

Myofascial release offers not only effective and sustainable pain relief and increased function, but also the broad and integrative end of the spectrum of manual therapies, while the fine manipulations taught by Jean Pierre Barral offer visceral manipulations to explore the sources of our Qi, and neural manipulations to free the snags along the pathways of our channels of communication and connection.

Healing, at its roots, comes from the word “healan” which means “ to make whole.” As we open to ourselves and become connected to our own essence, we can truly heal, once again embodying our fascial bodies. Myofascial release brings fluidity to our solidified scars frozen in time and space, unable to process the moment, we carry a reminder that our healing is still possible.

This practice has opened Derrick’s eyes to the acupuncture channels.  As three lines appeared along the arm during an extended pull, and curiosity for time-tested herbal remedies, the next steps of his adventure led to obtaining his Master’s Degree in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.

The philosophies of Chinese Medicine have done wonders to understand the doors that stand before us in our healing journey-- our own journey to finding our one true self; the two poles of yin and yang, shading our mountain on either side of the path we walk; The Six Stages representing the division and transformation of these physical and ethereal realities within us; and the Five Elements balancing our flight through the universe along our way to wholeness.

Weaving in modern perspectives on personal growth and development, we can start to return to our true human nature: loving, expressive, symbiotic, creative, and at peace with others and our environment.  The work of Dr. Gabor Mate brings in compassionate inquiry for diving deeper into our own belief systems, and exploring those moments when we needed to adapt to the situation in order to get one of our four basic needs met.

Whether you have physical pain, or are burning with the manic need for self expression;  Grieving the severed connections and forgotten physical feats of your past, restlessly seeking comfort and security; or  Striving for the opportunities to reach up and stand out among the brambles from where you’re rooted -- manual therapies can help facilitate your own healing process.

Come explore the physical, emotional, and spiritual growth which awaits behind the doors of your own healing journey-- Derrick will help you to discover that you hold the key to your health in your own hands.

Integrative Myofascial Release FAQs

  • Myofascial Release uses extended holds to encourage change in the body. These holds are often not painful and feel like "a good stretch." Practitioners hold this good stretch at each resistance barrier, allowing for the tissue to melt and change, and repeat until the targeted area releases.

  • You can think of fascia like a spider web. The stringy tissue is densely woven throughout your muscles, bones, nerves, arteries, veins, and organs. Your fascia is one continuous structure throughout your body. Each part of your body is connected to it in some way. That’s why if there’s a snag in the tissue in one part of your body, it can cause pain in another part of your body.

  • Myofascial Release is a 30-minute appointment that uses Myofascial Release techniques.

Integrative Myofascial Release is offered in longer appointment times (60, 90, or 120 minutes) and uses Myofascial Release, Visceral and Neural Manipulation, Craniosacral Therapy, and Traditional Chinese Medicine techniques to tailor the treatment to best suit each individual patient.

  • For best results, Myofascial Release is performed with skin-to-skin contact. During a Myofascial Release session, there is often stretching, movement, and a standing evaluation.

We recommend wearing or bringing athletic shorts and a bra if applicable.

  • After your provider performs myofascial release therapy, you may feel sore in the areas they stretched. But the soreness should go away fairly quickly. You should feel a lot looser in those areas than you did before.

Your provider may recommend returning for sessions for a few weeks or a few months. It will depend on the cause and severity of your condition.

  • You can perform myofascial release on yourself at home. You can find videos online with basic myofascial release techniques. You’ll use a foam roller or roller massager to gently apply pressure to your fascial tissues. Some studies have shown using a foam roller for self-myofascial release has helped increase joint range of motion. Our practitioner often sends patients home with personalized instructions for Self-Myofascial Release.
